The Earlybird Convention Begins!

It's a good thing that Starbucks opens early and that there is nice weather in Denver this weekend. There was definitely no shortage of people lined up outside the convention center when the doors opened at 7 a.m. today. As soon as those doors opened, many of the 142 teams with 8 a.m. matches came inside to lay their claims to their team areas and begin preparation for play. Those teams were soon followed by row upon row of eager and attentive parents and teams with officiating assignments. Tickets were scanned, wristbands were checked, and play began with 71 whistles beckoning for 71 serves.
(In other news, not a single serve hit an eager and attentive parent with a hot cup of Starbucks in their hands. That didn't happen until the first attacks were hit several seconds later.)
Results will be available real time during play both weekends of the tournament.

Who Were Those Guys?
If you ventured past court 4 this evening, you may have noticed a bunch of non-spandex clad volleyballers with much deeper voices than what you are accustomed to hearing at a juniors tournament. No, that was not the new Select division that you've been hearing about, those were men's volleyball players. Local NAIA squad Johnson and Wales University scored a Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference win over visiting Peru State College in straight sets tonight. The Wildcats were able to bring their match to the convention center tonight but will be returning to their normal home site for tomorrow's rematch, which will be played at 7 p.m. For more information, visit their website.
Important Reminders
-
There will be a baggage check area on Sunday from 7 am until 4 pm in the Lower F Lobby to allow you to check out of your hotel and bring your bags with you to the convention center. At $2 per bag, its cheaper than holding a hotel room...
-
The open areas around the courts are not for team warm up or ball handling. These areas are designed to accommodate transit of spectators. We want to ensure the safety of all of our guests and we appreciate your assistance by keeping these areas as obstacle-free as possible.

At the completion of a match, the referee takes the score sheet to a computer station and enter the information into a database that is then used to transmit the information out to the world wide web where you are able to see it. Not only are they skilled officials but they are excellent data-entry specialists!
